You can still access the digital version of the Passenger's Voice and its archives whenever you visit our website! We hope to resume The Passengers' Voice as soon as is fiscally reasonable. Amtrak
Rail Passenger Association members earn Amtrak Guest Rewards© points when they join or renew membership. See the table below to see points received based on your membership level and whether you pay your dues annually or monthly.
Rail Passenger Association members save 10% on most rail fares. Accommodation charges for sleepers, Business Class and Acela First Class are not discounted; only the Rail Fare portion of the ticket is discounted.
Here are a couple of tips to help you book your ticket online with the discount:
- Select "Rail Passengers Association" as your Passenger Type (rather than the default "Adult" selection), on the first screen alongside destinations and dates.
- Your Rail Passengers Member Number must be six digits long for Amtrak to accept it! If your Rail Passengers member number is less than six digits, add the necessary number of zeros in front of the first number. (example: member #4970 becomes member #004970).
Reservations must be made three days or more in advance of travel. For example: if the first train in your reservation departs at 9:00 AM on Friday, make the reservation by 11:59 PM on Tuesday to receive the discount. Here are the exceptions and exclusions:
-
Not valid on weekday 'Acela Express' trains. On weekends, the Rail Passengers discount can be applied to the 'Acela Express' Business Class fare, and upgrades to Acela First Class can be made upon payment of the accommodation charge.
-
Not valid on the Canadian portion of the New York-Toronto 'Maple Leaf' (operated by VIA Rail Canada) between Niagara Falls, ON and Toronto, ON.
-
Not valid on certain Amtrak Thruway buses, primarily those with numbers in the 7000 and 8000 series.
-
Not valid with Special or promotional fares (see below).
-
The Rail Passengers discount cannot be applied to "Saver" fares and may not be combined with any other discount or promotional fare (including the Senior, Child and disability discounts, any fare obtained using a Promotion Code, any SmartSeats fare, and tickets purchased by redeeming Amtrak Guest Rewards points), nor may Rail Passengers-discounted reservations be upgraded using Amtrak Guest Rewards Free One-Class Upgrade coupons (unless additional fare is paid to make up for the loss of the discount).
-
The Rail Passengers discount may not be combined with any fare classified as a "Saver" fare at Amtrak.com (click here to learn about Amtrak's "Fare Families"). These are deeply-discounted fares on certain trains (primarily Northeast Regionals) available 14 days or more in advance of travel. An example is a $49.00 Washington-New York fare. You can only see Saver fares if you have "Adult" selected as your Passenger Type, rather than "Rail Passengers Association" or any other passenger type.
-
You must select "Adult" as your Passenger Type to use a Promotion Code or take advantage of a SmartSeats fare.
If booking a Rail Passengers-discounted reservation over the phone (1-800-USA-RAIL), you may NOT use Julie, the automated agent. Instead, when Julie picks up, say "Agent" and you will be transferred to a live person. Tell the agent you are a Rail Passengers member. If the agent questions you or does not know what Rail Passengers is, ask them to price your itinerary using passenger type 'AR' for each traveler who is a Rail Passengers member. The system will then prompt the agent to ask for your 6-digit Rail Passengers membership number.
If booking a Rail Passengers-discounted reservation in person with a ticket agent, have your Rail Passengers Association membership card handy. The card instructs the agent what code to use to obtain the discount.
Please keep your Rail Passengers Association membership card handy when traveling. You will generally be asked to present it if you claim your tickets from an agent at the station (you will not need to present it if you claim your tickets from a QuikTrak kiosk or if you use an eTicket). Rarely, a conductor on the train may ask to see your Rail Passengers Association membership card.

Voting Records
A summary of recorded votes that took place in Congress on passenger rail-themed bills and amendments.
(Note: Due to partisan bickering, many of the votes Rail Passengers has historically used to measure Congressional support for rail - yearly appropriations, rail and surface reauthorization, etc. - have not been taking place in recent years, with Congress resorting instead to budget omnibuses to fund the government. Thus, we have been able to produce fewer voting charts.)

"The Rail Passenger Association's recognition of the essential work done by SMART-TD members aboard Amtrak during this difficult period is appreciated. The Golden Spike Award serves as a testament to the compassion and dedication our conductors, assistant conductors and other workers exhibit constantly through times both ordinary and extraordinary."
Jeremy Ferguson, SMART-TD President
December 21, 2021, on the Association awarding its 2021 Golden Spike Award to the Frontline Amtrak Employees.
