Former Massachusetts Governor Dukakis Headlines ARP Transportation Panel

The Association for Public Transportation-Massachusetts Association of Railroad Passengers (APT-MARP) will host a Transportation and Economic Development Program on September 24, 2015, moderated by former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis. The program will be held at Northeastern University’s Alumni Center from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Click here to register for the Sept. 24 event.

The panel features Massachusetts public sector leaders, including: Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack; state Sen. Thomas McGee, chairman of the Joint Legislative Committee on Transportation; Thomas Cahir, Cape Cod RTA Administrator; and Somerville Mayor Anthony Curtatone. The discussion will cover their efforts and ideas to improve transportation in the state and how that links to economic development efforts.

Topics include: new infrastructure opportunities through strategic planning and development of brown field sites; transit-oriented development; the South Station terminal expansion; leveraging transportation funding by using state, federal and private sector revenue sources; and the legislature's role in improving public transportation and economic development to help make Massachusetts a desirable place to live and prosper.

NARP applauds APT-MARP for creating this panel that will look at present and future transportation efforts. This event is a great example of a local organization becoming part of the bigger transportation conversation that we call "A Connected America." This initiative is designed to link states and regions together with a high-quality, balanced intermodal and multimodal transportation system that serves all citizens and allows the nation to compete in the 21st century linked economy.

Groups like APT-MARP know that only connected communities and regions have a chance of attracting the jobs and people that make an economy grow and create vibrant places to live and work. They’re willing to work with their elected officials and put politics aside to advocate for a public transportation system that can transform their communities.
