Railroad Passengers Present Youth Award To Two Texas Universities
Washington, D.C.--The National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP) presented its Youth Passenger Citizenship Award to representatives from Sam Houston State University and University of North Texas for their support of the Texas Central Railway (TCR). TCR is a proposed high-speed rail project that will run between Dallas and Houston.
“We are happy to recognize these future Texan leaders for their accomplishments in supporting a project that will create jobs, build local businesses, and provide an alternative, safe transportation choice to community members,” said NARP CEO Jim Mathews. “It is important for NARP to recognize the next generation who are speaking up for a connected America.”
This award is given on occasion to students and young people who demonstrate exceptional leadership, initiative, or passion in making meaningful improvements in the train travel experience or in citizen advocacy for an expanded and improved passenger train network. It will be presented to students Drew Carson, Spencer Copeland and Sarah Landsman of Sam Houston State University at an April 21 reception at NARP’s annual Spring Council Meeting in Washington, D.C. The reception is being held at the Rayburn House Office Building, Room B-354, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Both Student Government Associations (SGA), assisted by NARP, wrote a resolution in favor of the project, which was then passed unanimously in both universities’ Student Senates. That led to the creation of the Texas Infrastructure Student Alliance, which includes Sam Houston, University of North Texas and Navarro College. Other resolutions are expected from Southern Methodist University, the University of Houston, Texas A&M, Paul Quinn College and the University of Dallas.

"Saving the Pennsylvanian (New York-Pittsburgh train) was a local effort but it was tremendously useful to have a national organization [NARP] to call upon for information and support. It was the combination of the local and national groups that made this happen."
